Writing in Nature Workshop

Updated January 5, 2026: note the new location for this workshop at the Rust Nature Conservancy in Leesburg, VA.
I enjoy writing in nature. It’s incredibly inspiring whether I’m walking around my neighborhood or hiking in the mountains. I often see stories and messages in the animals, plants, and trees I come across. I’m also an avid nature photographer, as anyone who follows me on Instagram or Facebook can attest.

An example of how I often see stories and messages in the animals, plants, and trees I come across. This is a social media post I wrote to promote my book. The occasion was a nature walk at the Virginia State Arboretum.

So it was an absolute pleasure to discover the (free) Writing in Nature Workshop in Leesburg, VA!

The Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy sponsors and hosts the workshops at the Rust Nature Sanctuary in Leesburg, VA. Writing expert Nancy Morgan leads the sessions, which last approximately one and a half hours.

The June writing prompt was “write about a family member (or other person) who introduced you to nature.” I wrote about fishing and swimming with my brothers on our summer vacations in the Shenandoah Mountains. A family friend owned a small cabin and lent it to us every year. It was the only way our large family of eight could ever afford a vacation. We were grateful and enjoyed spending time in nature.

After our writing exercise, we went around the table for optional sharing. It was a wonderful way to meet fellow writers and new friends.

If you are interested in attending an upcoming workshop, follow the Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy on Facebook or their website. Each session is a stand-alone event and requires registration. Questions? Contact: [email protected] or view the Writing in Nature web page.
